Sash Weight pocket cutting

I've just been having a conversation on a forum about the best way to cut out the pockets for the weights. A specialist chisel was mentioned but most folks make saw cut. I ground down an old chisel and did a quick test.
Here's the result..

I'll try a slightly thinner blade and witha bit of practice it will be real time saver.

The problem I originally had can be seen here http://slidingsash.blogspot.com/2008/11/big-mistake.html

Yep spoyyed the problem. Sash Windows are an art to restore and repair which takes practice.

Looks interesting, can you show how this tool is used? I don't get it

Hi OakBloke,

It's just hammered in, about 4 or five hits and I think I rocked it slightly. Like I say grinding it down thinner might help a bit. It just proves some of the old forgoten ideas are worth another look.

Have any ideas on how to possibly do this w/o removing the trim. I have a pocket on on side and no pocket on the other and want to be able to repair the sash cords

Hi Ryan,
Thats confusing, on a standard sliding sash there should be a pocket on both sides. Have you tried removing the paint etc.

The staff beads often cover the side of the pocket. Sometimes you can just prise it away enough to get the pocket cover off.

The only thing I can advise is to investigate further. If you're OK basic woodworking then I'm sure you can put it back together again.

I have removed all of the trim and have it down to just the wood. I am planning on and have on a different window brought back a natural wood finish on the windows and their trim.

I think the pocket on the other side was cut out during a previous repair (the house is >110 years old).

I was thinking of cutting the pocket with a skill saw, but was not sure how to make the angled cut along the top to keep it from falling in.

Ryan, It sound like the window must have been installed full assembled.

I would not try to make the angled cut. I'd cut straight through then fashion the "steps" at either end, like the right hand side of the picture above. The pocket cover can be made from a new piece and srewed on top and bottom.
